Traditional long golf irons like the 1, 2 3 or 4 irons are difficult for most average golfers to get airborne and hit consistently well. Hybrid clubs replace these longer irons and make life much easier for most golfers. They are in simple terms a cross between and fairway wood and an iron. They are very forgiving and very versatile, being equally useful off the tee as well as the fairway. Nearly all tour pros now carry hybrid rescue woods and they are sure to become more and more popular.
So how do they work? They have a deeper face-to-back than a normal iron, which allows maker so move the centre of gravity further back from the face, which means, the easier to get the ball airborne. They are also great from the rough - traditional irons with their more angular edges can snag in the grass, twisting the clubhead off-target – hybrids more resemble a wood, with smoother edges which reduce drag through thick grass.
Which Loft should I choose? It depends on which irons you want the club to replace. Most of the manufacturers denote the iron number the hybrid is supposed to replace on the club so a club with a ‘2’ stamped on the base denotes that club replaces the 2 iron. Some have simply the loft on the clubs so we have complied and handy list of loft/iron comparisons below
Hybrid and Iron Loft Comparison
